VetSuccess on Campus

Mission

The VetSuccess on Campus program mission is to provide supportive guidance to ensure veterans’ health, education, and VA benefits are met, while utilizing their VA educational benefits.

History

The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) – Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) initiated the pilot program, called VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC), to ease the transition of servicemembers to student veterans. By coordinating the delivery of benefits and services to veteran students, the VSOC program provides outreach to the veteran population during their transformation from military to civilian life.

The pilot program was first initiated at the University of South Florida campus in June 2009. Expansion included San Diego State University and Cleveland State University in January 2010. VetSuccess has continued to expand and ECU was the first campus in North Carolina to have a VSOC counselor.

Information

VSOC is the on-campus face of the VA and is here to address the unique needs of veterans in college. The VSOC counselor is able to provide support in numerous ways considering the following factors:

• Veteran students transitioning from active duty service to civilian life and educational pursuits that face unique challenges entering the college setting. They may need special supportive services to deal with issues such as symptoms of PTSD, TBI, or other mental and physical challenges.
• The ability to address veterans’ needs for assistance in accessing VA benefits, VA medical referrals, or veteran specific career and employment services.
• A VetSuccess counselor can provide a veteran student with a referral for health services through VA medical facilities and local Vet Centers, information on submitting a claim for Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VRE) as well as locating community and campus resources.
